Where to Share It

Philosophy is a conversation, and an essay is finished when someone else has read it and talked back. Here are some places to start, from the most informal to the most public. Read each outlet's guidelines before you submit.

  1. 1.

    A trusted first reader

Give it to a friend who knows no philosophy. If they can follow your argument, you've written it clearly. Philosophy Now gives the same advice to its own contributors.

  2. 2.

A reading group or philosophy café

Read it aloud and take questions at a Socrates Café, a library discussion group, or a philosophy meetup near you.

  3. 3.

    Your own newsletter or blog

Publish it on Substack, Ghost, or a personal site, and invite comments. A post to the r/philosophy community on Reddit requires a short abstract.

  4. 4.

    Magazines for general readers

Philosophy Now welcomes clear, jargon-free articles of 800 to 3,600 words from readers without formal training. Think, from the Royal Institute of Philosophy, publishes accessible philosophy for a general audience. Daily Philosophy and The Raven also take essays from non-academics.

  5. 5.

    Pitch a public philosophy outlet

When you're ready for a wider audience, Aeon and Psyche accept pitches and pay a modest fee. The British Philosophical Association keeps a list of public philosophy venues and what each one looks for.

Wherever you share it, keep a copy with your Statement of Intent. Rereading the two together shows how far you've come.
